Compost -
The Foundation
Your Garden Is Starving—
And Fertilizer Isn't Helping
Stop wasting money on chemicals that make your soil worse. Real compost rebuilds what decades of fertilizer destroyed—and it's the only permanent fix.
What You're Experiencing:
You've tried everything:
-
Bought the most expensive fertilizers
-
Applied them exactly as directed
-
Watered religiously, pulled every weed
-
Rotated crops, adjusted pH, added lime
But every year it gets worse:
-
Plants grow slower and produce less
-
Soil is hard, crusty, lifeless
-
Water runs off instead of soaking in
-
Weeds thrive but vegetables struggle
-
You're spending more money for worse results
Sound familiar?
You're not doing anything wrong. Your soil is broken—and no amount of fertilizer will fix it.
What Actually Happened:
Here's the truth no fertilizer company will tell you:
-
Chemical fertilizers didn't just fail to improve your soil—they actively destroyed it.
-
When you apply NPK fertilizer (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium), you're feeding the plant directly. That sounds good until you realize what you're NOT feeding: the soil.
Healthy soil isn't dirt. It's a living ecosystem:
-
Billions of bacteria breaking down organic matter
-
Fungal networks delivering nutrients to roots
-
Earthworms creating channels for air and water
-
Microorganisms suppressing disease and storing nutrients
Chemical fertilizers kill all of that.
The microbes starve. The fungi die. The earthworms leave. Your soil becomes sterile dirt that needs constant chemical life support just to grow anything.
There's only one way to reverse this damage: rebuild the biology your soil lost.
And that starts with real compost.
The Why??

"Chemical fertilizers didn't just fail to improve your soil—they actively destroyed it."
The microbes starved. The fungi died. The earthworms left.
What Real Compost Actually Is
- and What Most "Compost" Isn't -
Real compost is decomposed organic matter teeming with beneficial microorganisms. It's not just "dead stuff"—it's alive with billions of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that make soil work.
But here's the problem: most "compost" isn't real compost.

What Most People Call Compost:
-
Bagged "garden soil" with wood chips and filler
-
Mushroom compost (spent substrate with little biological value)
-
Half-rotted leaves and grass clippings
-
Manure that's too fresh (burns plants) or too old (no biology left)
Result: None of that rebuilds soil. At best, it adds some organic matter. At worst, it introduces weed seeds, pathogens, or toxic residues.

What Twisted Luck Compost Actually Is:
-
Hot-composted horse manure from local stables
-
Properly aged to kill weed seeds and pathogens
-
Rich in beneficial microorganisms that colonize your soil
-
Perfect carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for plant nutrition
-
Screened and ready to use—no guessing, no gamble
Result: This is the foundation every healthy garden is built on. Not because it's "organic" (though it is)—because it works.
The FIX!!
Hot Composting
The Science:
We maintain thermophilic composting temperatures (130-160°F) for weeks. This heat:
-
Kills weed seeds and pathogens
-
Breaks down complex materials completely
-
Preserves beneficial thermophilic bacteria
Why It Matters:
Most backyard compost never gets hot enough. You end up spreading weed seeds and incomplete material. Our process guarantees clean, safe, biologically active compost.
Proper
Aging
The Science:
After the hot phase, we age compost for months—not weeks. This allows:
-
Mesophilic bacteria to colonize (the workhorses of healthy soil)
-
pH to stabilize
-
Nutrients to become plant-available
-
Fungal networks to establish
Why It Matters:
Fresh compost can burn plants or tie up nitrogen. Overly aged compost loses biological activity. We age it just right—maximum biology, zero risk.
Quality
Control
The Science:
We source manure from horses fed quality hay (no herbicide residue), as well as community compost. We screen our finished compost to remove large particles. We test regularly to ensure:
-
No weed seeds germinate
-
Nutrient levels are consistent
-
Biological activity is high
Why It Matters:
You're not gambling on unknown quality. Every batch meets the same standard—because we control the entire process from start to finish.

What Compost Does That Fertilizer Can't
Compost isn't a fertilizer replacement—it's a soil rebuilder. Here's what happens when you add real compost to your garden:
The Difference Between Compost and Fertilizer:
-
Fertilizer feeds the plant (temporarily)
-
Compost feeds the soil (permanently)
Once your soil biology is rebuilt, it maintains itself. You're not on a treadmill anymore—you've fixed the foundation.
IMMEDIATE EFFECTS (First Application):
-
✅ Organic matter increases → soil holds more water
-
✅ Microbes colonize → nutrient cycling begins
-
✅ Soil structure improves → roots penetrate easier
-
✅ Plants access locked-up nutrients already in your soil
WITHIN 6-12 MONTHS:
-
✅ Fertilizer needs drop dramatically (microbes make nutrients available)
-
✅ Water retention increases (you water less)
-
✅ Earthworms return (a sign of healthy biology)
-
✅ Plants grow stronger, resist disease better
LONG-TERM (Year 2+):
-
✅ Soil becomes more self-sustaining (less inputs needed)
-
✅ Yields increase while costs decrease
-
✅ Soil structure continues improving
-
✅ You've broken the fertilizer addiction cycle

New Garden Beds
Application:
Mix 2-4 inches of compost into the top 6-8 inches of soil before planting.
Depth Guide:
-
Heavy clay soil: 4 inches
-
Balanced loam: 3 inches
-
Sandy soil: 4 inches
Why It Works:
Immediate soil structure improvement, microbial inoculation, slow-release nutrition for the entire growing season.
Established Gardens
Application:
Top-dress with 1-2 inches of compost annually (spring or fall). No need to dig it in—let earthworms do the work.
Frequency:
-
Year 1-2: Apply twice per year
-
Year 3+: Once per year maintenance
Why It Works:
Maintains soil biology, replenishes organic matter lost to decomposition, continues building soil health year after year.

Lawns & Landscaping
Application:
Top-dress lawns with ¼-½ inch compost in spring or fall. Spread over turf and water in.
Coverage:
-
½ cubic yard covers ~650 sq ft at ¼" depth
-
1 cubic yard covers ~325 sq ft at ½" depth
Why It Works:
Improves soil without disturbing grass, feeds turf naturally, reduces fertilizer and water needs over time.

The Solution!!

"Fertilizer feeds the plant (temporarily). Compost feeds the soil (permanently)."
Once biology is rebuilt, it maintains itself. You've fixed the foundation.
— Sarah K., Home Gardener
(3 years using our compost)
"I was skeptical—how different could compost really be? But after one season with Twisted Luck compost, my tomato plants were twice the size and my soil actually felt different. Softer, richer. I'm a believer now."
— Mike R., Professional Landscaper
"We've been landscaping for 20 years. Twisted Luck compost is the only one we use for client installations now. Plants establish faster, soil drains better, and we've had zero callbacks for poor growth. It's worth every penny."
— Tom J., Vegetable Farmer
"I farm 40 acres of vegetables. Switched from synthetic fertilizer to Twisted Luck compost on 10 acres as a test. Yield was identical—but my input costs dropped 40% and soil tilth improved dramatically. Expanding to the whole farm this year."
F.A.Q.
Q: How much compost do I need?
A: Small raised bed (4x8 ft): ~½ cubic yard | Average garden (10x20 ft): ~1-2 cubic yards | Lawn (1,000 sq ft): ~1-2 cubic yards (at ¼-½" depth). Use our calculator on the LEARN page for exact amounts.
Q: Can I use too much compost?
A: No. Unlike chemical fertilizers, you cannot "burn" plants with TWISTED LUCK's compost. More is almost always better—especially in poor soil.
Q: Will this introduce weeds into my garden?
A: No. Our hot-composting process kills weed seeds. We also test every batch to ensure no weed germination.
Q: How long does compost last in soil?
A: Organic matter breaks down over time (this is normal and healthy). Reapply annually to maintain soil health. Each application builds on the previous one—your soil improves year after year.
Q: Is this certified organic?
A: Our products are 100% natural and meet organic standards. We're not certified organic (no synthetic chemicals to certify against), but everything we use is OMRI-compliant, and are working to get our OMRI certification.
Q: Do I still need fertilizer after using compost?
A: Initially, yes—ONLY if your soil is severely depleted. Over time (1-2 years), fertilizer needs drop dramatically as soil biology rebuilds. Many gardeners eliminate synthetic fertilizers entirely right away with a heavy foundation of Twisted Luck Compost, and Worm Castings applied at planting.
